Discover the frogs at Shailer Pioneer Park

Who Croaks at Shailer Pioneer Park?

On the 11th and 12th of October 2017, Logan City Council in collaboration with the University of Queensland held frogs surveys at Shailer Pioneer Park. The surveys were part of a broader study which aimed to compare a constructed wetland with natural/more established wetlands for frog species richness in the urban catchment of Slacks Creek in the City of Logan.

Over the two nights 12 volunteers listened to a short presentation about frogs and surveying methods. They then spent an hour looking and listening for frogs at the wetland. The results of the surveys show that Shailer Pioneer Park had as equally high number of species as the other more established wetlands upstream and downstream of the park.  We encountered five frog species at the wetland, two more than what was previously known to occur.  One of the newly discovered frogs was the vulnerable Tusked Frog (Adelotus brevis). The other frogs sighted or heard calling were: Eastern Sedge Frog (Litoria fallax), Graceful Tree Frog (Litoria gracilenta), Striped Marsh Frog (Limnodynastes peronii) and the Cane Toad (Rhinella marina).

Logan City Council and the University of Queensland wish to extend a huge thank you to all those who participated in the surveys. We hope you learnt something new about frogs.
