Richmond Birdwing Butterfly

Ornithoptera richmondia

These rare butterflies were once found across South-East Queensland. Loss of habitat and other factors have resulted in a decline of this species, but through the efforts of the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network, this beautiful butterfly is slowly returning. At Griffith University, a number of vines (Pararistolochia praevenosa) that provide food for the caterpillars have been planted.
